About the Library
The WJ Talbot Library is a departmental library and is often referred to as the Engeo Library or the Environmental and Geographical Science Library. It is a resource centre used mostly by the staff and students of the Environmental and Geographical Science Department but is available to all members of the university community as well as other teaching and professional institutions.
The WJ Talbot Library is named after William Talbot, the first professor of Geography at the University of Cape Town. The Library holdings comprise of reference books, general books and journals on environmental and geographical science, a collection of reports, reprints, conference proceedings, maps, videos, slides, theses and newspaper clippings.
The holdings in this library are virtually all donations from staff or students with only a few current journal titles.
Library Hours
The library is open during the following times;
Mondays to Thursdays: 08h30 - 13h00 and 14h00 - 16h30
Fridays: 08h30 - 13h00 and 14h00 - 16h00

Holdings
Books
The books are arranged according to an adapted Dewey Decimal Classification and include reference books and general texts.
Periodicals
Journals are arranged alphabetically by title on the shelves.
Newsletters
Newsletters are arranged alphabetically by title in filing cabinets.
Theses
Masters and PhD theses are arranged alphabetically by author.
Honours theses are arranged by year and then alphabetically by author.
Reports, reprints and Conference Proceedings
This collection is arranged by accession number in box files.
Maps
The map collection is housed in hanging cabinets except for the teaching sets which are housed in the lecture rooms.
Slides
Some of the collection has been scanned and placed on the EGS website

Newspaper Clippings
The newspaper clippings are filed alphabetically by subject.
Short Loan Facility
The short loan facility is specifically for the ENGEO students where the lecturers will place the relevant readings for the courses as they are taught. The facility is utilised mainly for the post-graduate students but from time to time will service the undergraduate courses as well.
