Diary of The Complex Human - Ecological Systems Class West Coast Fieldtrip
Written by Zakiya Abrahams
The Complex Human-Ecological Systems class recently went on a 2-day fieldtrip along the West Coast to Milnerton beach, Big Bay, Langebaan and Saldanha Bay.

The purpose of the fieldtrip was to get first hand experience to the complex issues occurring along the coasts of the Western Cape. The class observed socio-ecological problems in person and spoke to small-scale fishers, park authorities as well as a government representative.
It was so interesting to witness these characters, environments and situations we discuss endlessly in the classroom come to life and gave me a better understanding of how complex these socio-ecological problems are. As a class, we bonded over communal cooking, burning in the West coast sun and learnt more about birds than we anticipated.
