BSc (Eng) Civil, PhD (UCT)

Academic Profile

My main areas of teaching and research are clustered around the topics of environmental assessment and sustainability.
I am the convenor of the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme in Environmental Management (EGS 5008W).
I engage with students from a number of disciplines including Environmental Management, Civil Engineering, Urban Geography, City and Regional Planning, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture.
I am a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and the South African Affiliate (IAIAsa) of this international grouping. I am registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a professional civil engineer.

Current teaching: EGS 2011S, EGS 4006F (convenor), EGS 4011Z (convenor), EGS 5024Z

Research Interests

My primary research focus is on the theory and practice of all aspects of Environmental Assessment (EA), including its integration with land use planning and engineering design. My current research analyses the role of knowledge and power in decision making in developing EA methodology.
Secondary research foci relate to sustainability in the provision of the built environment and in the corporate sector.
